Robert Scales, adjusting his bow tie

Robert Scales

Robert Scales is a technologist, educator and early adopter who has spent more than 25 years helping people and businesses put new technology to work. He holds a Diploma in New Media Design and Development from BCIT and was named Graduate of the Year at the 2006 Canadian New Media Awards. He taught at Vancouver Film School and co-founded Raincity Studios, a Vancouver and Shanghai studio that built social platforms for clients including Sony, Warner Bros. and the Government of Canada. He later co-founded Ceningan Divers in Indonesia, recognised internationally for sustainable diving.

Robert started experimenting with GPT models through AI Dungeon in 2019, then studied machine learning and Transformers for natural language processing. He tested ChatGPT before its public release and, in April 2023, published A Beginner's Guide to ChatGPT, followed by its French edition. The book reached #1 in Amazon's artificial intelligence category. He builds with AI every day, from custom GPTs to coding agents, and coaches entrepreneurs on using it well.

How this guide uses AI

The guide is human-directed and AI-assisted. Robert Scales chooses the questions it answers, the method it teaches and the milestones it follows. Various AI tools help research, draft, translate and rewrite the articles. Each article is built from the two or three sources listed at its end, official sources first.

Every article is written as of the date it shows, using only what was known that day, so you can follow the path AI took from 2019 to today, milestone by milestone. Each article also shows the day it was published on this site and, when it changes, the day it was updated. Older articles point to newer ones on the same topic, because advice that was right in 2021 may not be right today.

Some of the free tools, such as the Antagonist, are made to be used with an AI assistant, and the site will add more features that use AI over time.
